Practical Biodynamics Workshop

Biodynamics offers a holistic approach to growing which can enhance any organic or regenerative growing system. It works with natures rhythms and uses the biodynamic ‘preparations’, 9 soil remedies made from plants and minerals, to create soil fertility and thriving balanced ecosystems.

This workshop will be an introduction to the biodynamic approach. We will cover the main principles and practices, and you will learn the simple steps needed to get started with biodynamics in your own gardens and properties.

We will hear from Steve & Jenny Erickson of Chaos Springs about how to integrate biodynamics into a larger farm setting, including a look at their own on farm set up.

We will end the day putting the theory into practice, making a cow pat pit and stirring and spreading preparation 500.

Please bring a plate for a shared afternoon tea. Hot drinks will be provided.

Bring a 2L bottle/container (with a lid) if you would like to take some prep 500 home to spread on your own garden.

Dress for the weather - part of this workshop will happen outdoors. Bring gloves (suitable for handling cow manure) and be sure to wear clothes that you can get dirty in.

Facilitated by Bridget Henderson, BDNZ. Bridget has many years of practical work in Biodynamics having worked with Biodynamic Icon John Pearce for over 20 years.

Herbal Remedies for Animals and Humans

Herbal Remedies for Animals and Humans

There is a great deal of overlap between the remedies used for cows and humans.  This workshop will help people get over their impression that herbs are hippy BS by  running through the science, particularly as it pertains to treatment of  antibiotic resistant infections with herbs.  We will  also discuss the links between cow antibiotic use, soil decline and cow digestion that are paralleled in humans.

Tutor: Phyllis Tichinin

Phyllis has a long history in soil and animal health. Educated as a soil scientist and trained by some of the best people in the industry, including Dr Arden Anderson, Dr Paul Dettloff and Jerry Brunetti, she describes herself as an Eco-nutritionist – Someone who looks for the patterns that link soil health, food nutrient density, environmental integrity and human well-being. With a mind like a steel trap for facts and figures, she specialises in coaching farmers to grow foods that heal both people and the planet and in educating consumers to demand healthy food from truly healthy soils.   She is keen for farmers to see themselves as the foundation for planetary recovery….the real health professionals. This is a session you don’t want to miss.

Managing Farm Energetics
Oct

Managing Farm Energetics

Quantum Based Agriculture works with the circuitry of the soil/plant system. Most people understand that soil minerals contain positive and negative charges. But QBA goes beyond simple charges to the interactions of all the vibrations that exist in soils, plants and the atmosphere.

Phil Callahan did extensive research on the vibrational energy of plants, soils and animals. A few theories and systems exist for managing the energetic system of agriculture.

Biodynamics is the best known method as described by Rudolph Steiner in 1924. The use of homeopathy is also becoming more widespread in agriculture.

Although we are only beginning to understand the importance and power of this aspect of soil management, we believe it is essential to consider the energetic component in your soil management plan and start to understand Quantum Based Agriculture.

This will be an introduction to these concepts looking at various applications and practices.

Organic Open Day - Alexander Farm

We have a fantastic short day planned to look at Spring Fertility Management. Tracey from Homepathic Farm Services, and Steve from Chaos Springs will be joining us.
Matt Gallagher from Asure Quality will also be here with an update on the National Organics Standard with some key changes and how they might affect us on farm.

 Lunch will be provided.

Please still ‘purchase’ a free ticket so we know how many lunch numbers etc.

We encourage you to bring someone who isn’t a member, maybe someone who is thinking of converting to organics.

Cost: $20 or Free for ODPG Members

Microscope Workshop by Soil Food Web
Oct

Microscope Workshop by Soil Food Web

This a practical foodweb workshop to supply the participants with the skills to conduct qualitative assessments on their compost teas or compost inoculum.

It includes training on how to use your small microscope and recognition of the following groups of organisms: bacteria, fungi, protozoa and nematodes.

Attendees are supplied with a manual describing in detail the workings of their microscope, colour prints of microbes and qualitative assessment template/sheets.

This day course is primarily aimed at first time users; farmers making their own compost inoculums or teas, and input suppliers producing inoculum on a commercial scale.

The foodweb workshop training is a hands on experience therefore each student must supply their own microscope with the following specifications: minimum 3 objectives (4x, 10x, 40x magnification) A Binocular is recommended. Two 10x eyepieces. Light source and adjustable light condenser. Fine and course focus ability. Fully mechanical stage. Some microscopes interface with computer and/or cameras. These microscopes are easily obtainable in NZ and range in cost from $750.00 onwards.

Making & Using Biochar

This one day workshop will include

What is Biochar?

How do you make it?

Uses and benefits

Kiln types and scales

Application methods and rates

The Workshop will be run by Shakēd From and Dr Pranoy Pal.

Pranoy Pal has over 10 years as a skilled scientist and manager and is highly experienced in the best practices of kiwifruit production.
